Purple Nutsedge

Cyperus rotundus

Purple nutsedge is a rapidly spreading, dark-green perennial with three-ranked leaves. Purple nutsedge is less cold tolerant than yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus). The foliage of purple nutsedge tends to be darker in color than yellow nutsedge as well. Furthermore, the leaf tips of purple nutsedge tend to be blunter than those of yellow nutsedge. Purple nutsedge propagates from tubers connected in chains by rhizomes. Seedheads are reddish brown in color.
